As Konneh Backs out as ECSL Chairman… Will SLPP Gov’t Plant Another Stooge For 2028 Elections?

Report have reached Voice of Salone Newspaper that the Substantive ECSL Chairman, Mohamed Konneh, has decided to step down as Chairman of the ECSL for second Term, citing family reasons, among other things.

“I will not be running for the ECSL Chairmanship for a second Term in office, as July 2025 ends my current term. This decision is tied to family reasons”, Konneh said in a Press Conference held recently, while defending the 3% discrepancies in the announced Presidential results, wherein SLPP secures 56.1% as opposed to 53.1% announced by the National Elections Watch (NEW) a Civil Society Organization monitoring Elections in SierraLeone, arguing that the ECSL covered 11,832 polling stations across the country, while NEW covered only 700 stations, and that their PVRT results had problems worldwide.

Konneh’s announcement was greeted with mixed feelings by pro and anti- supporters of the SLPP, as well as critics from various sides of the aisle.

From the SLPP perspective, they described the announcement of Konneh as timely, and celebrated him for demonstrating what they described as “Statemanship”, and setting an example of what his predecessors failed to do whilst they were in office.

“Mohamed Konneh has done a honorable thing, to walk out as ECSL Boss after his current tunure elapses in July 2025. This hasn’t been done by his Predecessors”, said strong voices of the SLPP.
On the other hand, the APC lambasted Konneh’s recent outbursts and described his statement as troubling and detrimental to the country’s peaceful coexistence.
Lansanah Dumbuya characterized Konneh’s recent remarks, asserting adherence to electoral protocols and dismissing the need for post-election result publication, as deeply troubling for Sierra Leoneans. He accused Konneh of exacerbating national issues, attributing current challenges to the ECSL’s alleged mishandling of the June 24,2023 Presidential and General Elections.
“This fight Trancends Party lines. it’s about defending Democracy and ensuring every voice counts”, he asserted, urging for patience as investigations continue, and criticized the ECSL’s conduct under Konneh’s leadership, intimidating how the latter disenfranchised voters and undermined electoral integrity.
However, Political pundits also described the earlier announcement of Konneh as a signal of how he is obsessed and tired of being the ECSL Commissioner.
“If Mohamed Konneh would have done the wright thing in the previous Election; he couldn’t have bothered himself to make a hasty announcement about his departure at ECSL as soon as his tenure of office elapses in July 2025”, a seasoned political pundit analysed, arguing that if Konneh had displayed honesty and fairness in the June elections, his name should have been recorded in the Guinness book of records, positioning him as the Best Electoral Commissioner ever in the history of Sierra Leone.
As Konneh’s announcement becomes a topic of discussion in every corner of the country, speculation is rife that after the departure of Konneh, the SLPP Gov’t is planning to impose Edmond Alpha as New ECSL Boss. Whether this information is anything to go by, this medium is still observing the situation, as we have conducted a background investigation to authenticate this information.
