During parliamentary deliberations on the ratification of key diplomatic agreements, the Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo, commended the Minister of Foreign Affairs for his proactive leadership but issued a cautionary note regarding national security.
Hon. Kargbo warned against inadvertently creating openings for drug trafficking under the guise of enhanced international cooperation. While expressing support for diplomatic engagement, he emphasized the need for vigilance in protecting Sierra Leone’s borders and national integrity.
He lauded the visa exemption agreement signed with the Republic of Kazakhstan, describing it as a positive step toward strengthening bilateral relations. On the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea agreement, Hon. Kargbo noted that it would play a critical role in safeguarding marine biodiversity and promoting economic diversification.
The APC leader also welcomed Sierra Leone’s periodic report to the United Nations on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, reaffirming the opposition’s commitment to supporting national interest–driven initiatives.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Tawa Conteh, also praised the Foreign Affairs Minister for championing the diplomatic agreements. He highlighted that the periodic report submitted to the UN reflects substantial progress, particularly in education and healthcare. “The report speaks volumes about the nation’s achievements,” he remarked.
Parliament concluded the debate by ratifying the following key agreements:
• Visa Exemption Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of Sierra Leone for holders of diplomatic and service passports;
• Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea regarding the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction;
• Combined 6th and 7th Periodic Report under Article 44 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, submitted by the Government of Sierra Leone.
These developments mark significant strides in Sierra Leone’s international diplomacy and reaffirm the country’s commitment to global cooperation and national development.
