APC, Gov’t Mediation Process To Commence Soon

Report filtering into this medium revealed that a team of peacemakers from Commonwealth, ECOWAS and European Union have arrived in Sierra Leone to broker peace between the ruling Government and the APC. The focus of the team, according our information, is to facilitate a peaceful dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition over the controversies surrounding the June 24 General elections.
It is important to note that the APC outrightly rejected the outcome of the June 24 elections, citing significant irregularities and breaches of electoral procedures. As a result of that, the APC took the stance to boycott all levels of Governance including the legislature and local councils. The APC decision resonates with the call of the grassroots who are opting for a fresh election as a way to heal the electoral wounds.
On the other hand, supporters of the ruling government are confident that there won’t be another election, asserting that the results announced by the Chief Electoral Commissioner will stand.
They emphasized that the ECSL is an autonomous body responsible to pronounce the winners of any election and their decision is sacrosanct.
To show the commitment to restore peace in Sierra Leone, the U.S Secretary for West Africa (DAS) and Sahel, Michael Heath visited Salone.
DAS Heath underscored the importance of inclusive national dialogue to rebuild confidence in Salone’s democracy in meeting with VP Jalloh.
DAS Heath assured VP Jalloh of U.S. support for ECOWAS leadership in preserving constitutional order in Niger. Stability in the Sahel depends on the restoration of credible, democratic governance across the region.
DAS Heath highlighted U.S. commitment to private-sector led, broad-based economic growth in meeting with the Finance Minister Sheku Bangura. Sustained economic reforms will help attract increased foreign direct investment to improve the lives of all in Salone.
DAS Heath welcomed a close partnership with Salone on the UN Security Council in his meeting with the Acting Foreign Minister. Upholding international law, defending sovereignty and territorial integrity means working together to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
DAS Heath pressed the importance of constructive opposition participation in national dialogue and national institutions in his meeting with APC Leader Samura Kamara.
It is worth noting that MCC Compact can only move forward if there are meaningful democratic and electoral reforms.
Nevertheless, the people of Sierra Leone are optimism that the mediation team will facilitate a peaceful dialogue in the best interest of the nation and its citizens.
