Alleged Sexual Abuse at Basharia School Sparks Official Probe

By VOS Writer
The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has launched a formal investigation into serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving a teacher at Basharia Islamic Primary School, located at 1 Brass Street, Fourah Bay.
According to reports filed on June 30, 2025, the teacher is accused of sexually abusing two pupils. The suspect has since been suspended from duty and is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The Ministry confirms that the affected pupils have undergone medical examination and are safe and under appropriate protective care.
In a public statement issued by MBSSE, it reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV), emphasizing that schools must remain safe spaces — free from abuse, exploitation, or fear.
The Ministry is working closely with:
• Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs
• Ministry of Social Welfare
• Ministry of Local Government
• Ministry of Internal Affairs
• Sierra Leone Police and school authorities
This collaborative, survivor-centered response is designed to ensure that both justice and comprehensive care are provided.
However, the case has added urgency to long-standing concerns about child protection in schools. In April 2025, the Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) submitted a detailed report to Minister Conrad Sackey, titled:
“Addressing Issues Relating to School Safety in Sierra Leone”
The report highlighted systemic gaps in school safety protocols, referencing the tragic deaths of Khadija Jalloh (November 2024) and two pupils at the National Pentecostal School (March 2025). Among its recommendations were:
• Stricter vetting procedures for school personnel
• Enhanced reporting mechanisms
• Robust psychosocial support systems for survivors
In response to mounting national concern, MBSSE—supported by international partners including the World Bank, FCDO, EU, and Irish Aid—plans to convene a nationwide, multi-sectoral dialogue on SRGBV.
This high-level forum will bring together:
• Educators
• Justice officials
• Child protection advocates
• Community leaders and policymakers
The goal is to develop a coordinated national strategy to address SRGBV with urgency, precision, and compassion.
The Ministry urges the public to remain calm, allow due process to proceed and refrain from speculative or harmful commentary.
“We are committed to full transparency while upholding the dignity and well-being of the children involved,” the Ministry stated.
