President Elect for the Lawyers Society, Augustine Sengbe Marah, has expressed his disappointment over what he described as Government’s decision to prevent their keynote speaker from Kenya from attending the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Marah stated in an interview that during his conversation with the Kenya LawyersΒ  Association President, Faith Odhiambo, after making all the necessary arrangements for her to travel to Sierra Leone and serve as their keynote speaker in the Society Annual General Meeting, Madam Odhiambo expressed her regret for not being in attendance, citing security concerns from a letter she received from the Secretary to the President, through the Sierra Leone Ambassador to Kenya.

Faith Odhiambo, according to Marah, was advised by the Sierra Leone Ambassador to Kenya not to attend the Society AGM as her safety could not be guaranteed.

As a result of this, Marah contacted the Attorney General to cross check whether the decision is the position of the Government, but the Attorney General had denied any knowledge about it.

The Sierra Leone Lawyers Society, which was formed after breaking away from the Sierra Leone Bar Association over allegations of electoral fraud in Kenema, had invited the Kenyan Lawyers Association President to deliver a keynote address. The Keynote speaker could not make it up to attend the program but delivered her speech virtually.

The decision has sparked criticism from the breakaway legal body, which views the move as an attempt to suppress its activities.
